Chick Here For The History of Utah

Utah Facts
- Utah is the fastest-growing state in the United States as of 2008.
- Saint George, UT was the fastest–growing metropolitan area in the United States from 2000 to 2005.
- The word “Utah” originates from an Apache Indian word (yuttahih), which means "one that is higher up." Europeans thought the word referred to Indians living higher in the mountains than the Navajo the territory became known as the land of the Utes, and eventually Utah.
- Utah was originally called “Deseret” meaning  "honeybee". The word “Deseret” is from the Book of Mormon.

Some Temple Facts …
- There are 135 Mormon Temples Worldwide
- The first Mormon temple was built was in Kirtland OH and is an National Historic Landmark.
- The first Mormon temple built in Utah was built in St. George UT.
-  Mormons view temples as central to the establishment of Zionist communities.
- Temples are considered by Church members to be the most sacred structures on earth.
 .
Temple Open House – Once and Once Only
Upon completion, temples are usually open to the public for a short period of time an "Open House". During the Open House, the church conducts tours of the temple with missionaries and members from the local area serving as tour guides, and all rooms of the temple are open to the public.
.
The temple is then dedicated as a "House of the Lord," after which only members in good standing are permitted entrance, thus they are not churches but rather places of worship. There are 138 operating temples (3 undergoing renovation), 14 under construction, and 14 announced (not yet under construction).
.
Within temples, Mormons make covenants, receive instructions, and perform sacred ordinances, such as: baptism for the dead, washing and anointing (or "initiatory" ordinances), the "endowment," and eternal marriage sealing’s. Ordinances are a vital part of the theology of Mormonism, which teaches that they were practiced by the Lord's covenant people in all dispensations. Additionally, members consider the temple a place to commune with God, seek His aid, understand His will, and receive personal revelation.
.

Some Temple Ceremonies Covenants, Ordinances, and More …
Mormon Endowment Ceremony ritual prepares participants to become kings, queens, priests, and priestesses in the AFTERLIFE.  Mormons believe that each member could become a god and ruler of the planets just as biblical Jehovah had become in this corner of the universe. Coronation Ceremony similar but different levels.
.
Baptism for the Dead Ceremony a ritual vicarious baptism or proxy baptism today commonly refers to the religious baptizing a living person on the behalf of one who is dead; with the living person receiving the ordinance of baptism, on behalf of the deceased person.  Baptism for the dead is today the best known as a doctrine of the Mormon movement, where it has been practiced since 1840. It is currently performed only in dedicated temples.
.
Marriage Sealing Ceremony ritual is  performed in Mormon temples by a person holding the sealing authority. The purpose of this ordinance is to seal familiar relationships, making possible the existence of family relationships throughout eternity. LDS teachings place great importance on the specific authority required to perform these sealing’s. Church doctrine tecahes that this authority, called the Priesthood, corresponds to that given to Saint Peter in Matthew 16:19.
.
Coronation Ceremony ritual in which members of the House of Israel i.e. Mormons are promised to become kings and queens, priests and priestesses, and are given all the rights, privileges, knowledge, and wisdom necessary in order to make that promise a reality while living. By doing so, members of the House of Israel become one with Christ (John 17), and therefore receive all that Christ has been given, including a crown, a robe of righteousness, and a throne (Rev. 1:6; Rev. 2:10; Rev. 3:21). The endowment is ancient, which the Mormons believe began and was given to our first parents, Adam and Eve.
.
Coronation Ceremony a Mormon ritual similar to Endowment but for the here and now, not the afterlife, and through its political organization which Mormons say does not exist. The purpose is the Kingdom of God, says John J. Stewart in Joseph Smith the Mormon Prophet, the LDS plan on gaining a political stronghold in the U.S. government. The goal is to “bring the United States Government under the rule of the priesthood.”

The Mormon Tabernacle
Mormon Tabernacle, is located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT.  The Tabernacle was built between 1864 and 1867 on the west center-line axis of the Salt Lake Temple. The roof was constructed in an Ithiel Town lattice-truss arch system that is held together by dowels and wedges. The building has a sandstone foundation, and the dome is supported by forty-four sandstone piers.
.
The Tabernacle has a seating capacity of more than 12,000. Brigham Young was a carpenter by trade, and his “turtle back” Tabernacle design came by inspiration, and was innovative. With the assistance of the Church architect, William H. Folsom, the construction of the Tabernacle began during the spring of 1863.
.
Every detail was attended to. The pioneers lacked standard building materials and had to be resourceful to undertake such a large structure. The timber for the large support beams had to be hauled from steep canyons far away. Some of the former Bowery was also reused. Often wooden pegs were used instead of nails, and beams were wrapped with strips of boiled animal skins (all which would prove the test of time amazingly well).
.
The Tabernacle would become one of the largest buildings of its kind in the world, measuring 150 feet wide, 250 feet long, and 80 feet high on the outside. When completed, the acoustics were unparalleled. The crowning glory was a large pipe organ hand crafted and brought at great sacrifice and through perilous Indian territory from California by ox.
.
By the fall of 1867, the Tabernacle and its organ was completed enough to be used.

Mormon Tabernacle Organ
The organ in the Tabernacle has the organ case positioned at the west end above the choir seats, and is the focal point of the Tabernacle's interior. The original organ was made by Joseph H. Ridges in 1867 and contained 700 pipes. The organ has been rebuilt several times with the total pipe count being 11,623, making the Tabernacle organ one of the largest pipe organs in the world. The current organ is the masterwork of G. Donald Harrison of the Aeolian-Skinner organ company, and was completed in 1948. The organ was renovated and restored in 1989 with a few minor changes and additions. Interestingly, the largest 32' display pipes in the façade are made of wood and were constructed in the same manner as the balcony columns.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir
.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, sometimes colloquially referred to as MoTab, is a Grammy and Emmy Award winning, 360-member, all-volunteer choir. The choir is part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church). However, the choir is completely self-funded, traveling and producing albums to support the organization. The choir's current music director is Mack Wilberg.
.
The Tabernacle itself was finished in 1867 and the Choir held its first concert there on July 4, 1873.
